Alex J. "Shonny" Szoke, age 87, of Fleetwood, passed away on Thursday Sunday November 18, 2018.
He was the husband of Gloria M. (Strohm) Szoke; they celebrated 65 years of marriage on April the 18 th .
Born in Evansville, the son of the late Stephen Szoke and Julia (Rasky) Szoke.
Alex was a graduate of Kutztown High School class of 1948. While in high school he joined the U S Marines Reserve and later transferred to the U S Navy serving during the Korean War.
Alex worked at Allentown Portland Cement in Evansville where he was past secretary of the union. He retired after 35 years in 1992. Following his retirement, he became an inspector for Berks County Weights and Measures for 15 years.
He was a member of Becker's St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Molltown, serving as a church council member and cemetery board member.
Alex was very active in Fleetwood where he was Borough Council member for 40 years, most of that time as president. Alex was a past chairman of the Berks County Democratic Committee. He helped start the Fleetwood AreaBaseball Association (FABA) and was a past Cub Scout master for Evansville and Fleetwood. A member of the Breakfast Brothers and the Fraternal Order Orioles Nest 23. During the 1973 Fleetwood Centennial year, Alex won the full beard award.
Alex is survived by his wife Gloria and children Michele A. (Szoke) Lenhart of Fleetwood; Steven C. Szoke, Fleetwood; and Scott A. Szoke, husband of Lorene A. (Miller) Szoke, of Wyomissing; grandchildren: Emily K. Szoke, Alexander J. Szoke, Gregory M. Lenhart, Steven P. Lenhart, Jenna N. Szoke and Rachel C. (Szoke) Texter; and one great- grandson Ryan D. Texter.
Other survivors are his sisters Edie (Szoke) Haller, Blandon and Eleanor (Szoke) Roberts, of Fleetwood. In addition, he is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his siblings: Stephen Szoke, Bertha (Szoke) Sommers, Lena (Szoke) Hacker, and Julie (Szoke) Benz, Frank Szoke, Josef Szoke and Gaza Szoke.
He will be sadly missed by his dog Charley.
A visitation will be held on Saturday morning from 11:00 a..m. to 1:00 p.m. at Becker's St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 265 Maidencreek Road, Molltown. A Celebration of Alex's life will follow at 1:00 p.m. in the church. Inurnment will be in Becker's St. Peter's Cemetery.
