Alton M. Smith, age 92, of Lancaster he was formerly of Fleetwood, passed away on September 24th in The Glenn at Willow Valley Retirement Community. He was the husband of Ruth Marie (Hartman) Smith, with whom he celebrated 28 years of marriage on September 13th. He was preceded in death by his first wife Charlotte D. (Dunkelberger) Smith who passed in 1983.
Born on September 9, 1922 in Allentown, the son of the late Matthew J. A. Smith and Mabel S. (Schaeffer) Smith.
He was a 1939 graduate of Fleetwood Hugh School. Also a graduate of Lebanon Valley College where he received a BS degree in business.
Alton was a U S Army veteran of World War II. During this time he received a purple heart.
He had worked in banking most of his life. His last position was as a circulation manager for Meridan Bank in Mt. Penn (now Wells Fargo Bank).
Alton for many years was a member of the Ringgold Band and the Happy Dutchman Band as well as many other bands. He excelled as a tennis player winning many championships in men's singles and doubles.
He was a loving husband, devoted father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family. He was formally very active in St. Paul's UCC Church Fleetwood serving as superintendent of Sunday School and Choir Director of the Adult Choir. Alton is survived by his wife Ruth Marie and three sons, David M. Smith husband of Kathleen S. Smith of Hamliton, Ohio, Daniel A. Smith husband of Susan I. Smith of Exeter and Steven C. Smith husband of Rebecca C. Smith of Blawenburg, NJ. Also five grandchildren, many step grandchildren and many step great grandchildren. Other survivors include step daughter Patricia (Peters) wife of Richard Steever of Harrisburg, step sons Robert Peters husband of Cathy Peters of Reading and James Peters husband of Karen Peters of Pittsburgh.
A funeral service will be held Saturday September 24th at 11:00 AM in Mae A. Stump Funeral home, Inc., 117 West Main Street, Fleetwood. A visitation will be held 10:00AM to time of service. Burial will be private in Forest Hills Memorial Park.
