Obituary

Barbara Ann Seyler ("Grandma") was a loyal, caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, friend and role model. She passed away peacefully and with great dignity, at her home on April 5, 2021, just two days before her 80th birthday. She was the fourth generation of women to have lived in the family home.

Barbara loved spending time in the kitchen and watching cooking shows on television. She was especially proud of her bartending abilities. She made the best Manhattan on the rocks, adding an extra splash of cherry juice. She was a wonderful teacher of all things that involved homemaking, such as gardening, ironing, cleaning, baking and cooking. Barbara was once in the Martha Stewart Show audience in New York City, and she showed her famous "mashed potato spoon" to the producer prior to the show. During the taping of the show, Martha came into the audience and examined the spoon, asking all about the history of this spoon, live on television – something Barbara was so tickled by, and talked about frequently.   She had a great sense of humor too. Her laugh was contagious.

A very fond memory of one of the many things that Grandma taught us was how to bake. She taught us to never crack an egg over your other ingredients, how to let bread rise in a humid closet in the summer, and to never give up your pursuit for the very best, most delicious recipe. We did just that with apple crisp, one of her favorite desserts. We tried out many recipes and one day proclaimed one to be the winner...only to immediately lose track of which one it was. Grandma tried various recipes over and over again to find that one recipe, to no avail. The idea of losing the recipe made us laugh for so many years after, and all the attempts to find it again were doubly sweet.

Barbara was the person you talked to when something was weighing on your mind. She made tea and listened, offering her gentle advice. She was, indeed, a most kind, empathetic, selfless and beautiful human being. She was also the best stay-at-home mom two children could ask for.

Barbara married the love of her life, Harold Seyler, in April of 1960. They raised two children, Steven and Stacey, along with many beloved pets, including Sam the Beagle, Patches the Chihuahua, Prince the German Shepard, Missy the Shepard/Collie, and Rusty Ranchet, Chrissy, and Kitty, all cats.

Barbara absolutely adored her family. Held very dear to her were her grandchildren: Courtney, Steven, Brandyn, Evyn, and Emily. She delighted in her two great-grandchildren: Milo Benjamin and June Loretta.

A private family memorial service is planned to celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America (https://alzfdn.org).
