Obituary

Eleanor S. (Mertz) Burgert, age 89, of Blandon passed away Thursday October 31, 2013 in Manor Care Health Services Laureldale. She was the wife of Harold S. Burgert. They would have celebrated 67 years of marriage on November 9th.
Born on May 18, 1924 in Kutztown. She was the daughter of the late Charles Mertz and Jenny (Deisher) Mertz.
Eleanor was a member of Maidencreek Church, Blandon where she was on the church choir and Ladies Auxiliary. Other memberships included the Ladies Auxiliaries of the Blandon and Walnuttown Fire Companies, the Kutztown Historical Society and a member of the PA Farm Bureau. Eleanor loved music and was a violinist with the Kutztown University Community Orchestra.
Eleanor was a graduate of Kutztown High School class of 1942 and Allentown Business School. She had worked in the offices of the former Equitable Life Insurance Co. and Kutztown Iron Foundry before becoming a full-time farming wife and mother. Eleanor, with her husband Harold owned a dairy farm in Maidencreek Township where she raised their four girls and devoted her life. They retired in 1985.
Eleanor spent many hours gardening and canning for the family. Caring for her many flower beds was "her relaxation". Family summers included Sunday picnics, fishing and clamming. She was still an avid reader, loved to write letters, play cards, eat chocolates and watch baseball. Her greatest joy was spending time and playing games with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Surviving is her husband Harold and four daughters Suzanne M. (Burgert) wife of Cliff Kerchner of Macungie, Diane M. (Burgert) wife of David Dreibelbis, Fleetwood, Lorraine M. (Burgert) wife of William "Al" Stolz of Oley and Romain M. (Burgert) wife of David Jensen, Blandon. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Eleanor was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.
A viewing will be held Thursday evening from 6:30PM to 8:30 PM at the Mae A. Stump Funeral Home, Inc., 117 West Main Street, Fleetwood. A second viewing will be Friday from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Maidencreek Church, 261 Main Street, Blandon. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM with Rev. Sara A. Hertzog officiating. Burial will be in Maidencreek Cemetery. Contributions can be made to the general fund of Maidencreek Church
