George Shollenberger, a lifelong resident of Richmond Township, Berks County, died peacefully in Reading Hospital on Monday, September 7, at the age of 93.
George was blessed by a large, loving family. He is survived by his wife (of 72 years) Grace (Lenhart), and his 4 children and their spouses: Sara Guerrero and Joe, Vallejo, CA, Alan and Diana, Bradenton, FL, Karen Raudenbush and Dan, Richmond Township, and Bill and Karen, Richmond Township. He is survived by 8 grandchildren and their spouses: Lori and Jon Bates, Brian and Angela Guerrero, Amanda and Kevin Benedict, Carly and Jake Edwards, Emily and Wheeler Gum, Lauren and Ben Wittenberg, Kyle Shollenberger, and Dr. Cori Shollenberger. George had 13 great grandchildren: Tierney and Brett Bates, Jaylen and Jaxson Guerrero, Lucy and Eliza Benedict, Ellie, Jude, Collette, and Ivy Edwards, and Owen, Claire, and Eve Wittenberg. He is preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Dietrich and Mary Shollenberger, and two brothers, Jonas and Earl Shollenberger.
George was the son of Clarence and Cora (Schlegel) Shollenberger. He graduated from Fleetwood High School before entering the Army in response to WW2. He was trained and worked as a plane mechanic on the B17 with the 390th Bomb Group and was stationed in Parham, England during the war. Before his placement overseas, he married Grace. At the end of the war, George and Grace bought a farm in Richmond Township and began dairy farming. In 1964, he changed careers and became a crane operator for Carpenter Steel. After retirement in 1984, George and Grace spent the next three decades travelling around the US by RV. He was an avid golfer, square-dancer, and card player. He enjoyed many winters in Bradenton, FL, and frequent reunions with his family.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 12th at 11AM at St. Paul's UCC , 5 West Arch, Fleetwood. Visitation will begin at 9:30, at which time a brief Masonic service will take place. A luncheon will be held at the church following the service. All are welcome to attend the celebration of George's life.
