IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Harold Schaeffer
Burgert
February 6, 1925 – October 6, 2017
Harold Schaeffer Burgert, age 92, died peacefully on October 6, 2017, at Penn State Health St. Joseph's Hospital Bern Township.
He was predeceased by his wife of nearly 67 years, Eleanor (Mertz) Burgert, who had passed on 10/31/13. He resided in Blandon and did so until recently.
Harold was the son of William and Esther {Schaeffer} Burgert. Harold was born on February 6, 1925, in the middle of a blizzard, on the Schlegel farm along Rt. 662 near Fleetwood ... "Front left room second floor." He attended a one room school until 9 th grade and then went to Fleetwood High School. He got married and he and Eleanor started farming and raised a family.
He is survived by four daughters and sons in law, Suzanne and Clifton Kerchner of Macungie, Diane and David Dreibelbis of Fleetwood, Lorraine and W. Allen Stolz of Oley, and Romain and David Jensen of Blandon. Harold has 8 grandchildren Jeffrey Kerchner, Adrienne Stevens, Karen Cochran, Amy Langman, Brad and Gregory Stolz, and Jordan and Emily Jensen. Harold also has 6 great grandchildren Lydia and Sophia Kerchner, Dana and David Stevens and Isabelle and Nora Langman.
Harold is also survived by his brother Ray Burgert and predeceased by infant sister Catherine.
Harold was a member of the Maidencreek Church, Walnuttown, Kutztown and Blandon Fire Companies, the Fireman's Association, Kutztown Fair Association and was involved with Maidencreek Township policies and meetings since the 60's. He was most proud of his involvement with PA Farmers Association (PFA) where he was a lifelong member and served as a Delegate for 25 years. Through PFA Harold was proud to have met several of the US Presidents during his travels.
He was a proud farmer, problem solver, builder, inventor and successful business man, whose mind never stopped designing. He loved technology and made video journals of Berks County sites which he recalled from his boyhood. He owned land near Massey's Landing in Delaware where he spent "any free time'' fishing and clamming with the catch of his life. After he and Eleanor retired at age 60 onto a smaller farm he kept busy making brooms from straw that he grew, made a cider press for his own apples in addition to a large garden. Harold devoted his later years caring for his wife. Harold became quite a good cook of all the PA Dutch delights. He LOVED watching wrestling, was always a trickster and teller of jokes and many stories. He was always involved with family, offering advice on any project they were working on. He loved when his entire family would congregate and was heard saying more than once, "this is what it's all about".
He could be seen daily riding his scooter around his property in a tall straw hat looking at his legacy while his failing eyesight still allowed glimpses of his beloved farm.
