Obituary

Harry B. Rhoads, Jr. age 89 of Blandon, formerly of Fleetwood, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 13, 2018, at the Lutheran Home at Topton, with his beloved wife Ruth A. (Adams) by his side.  They celebrated 66 years of marriage on November 24, 2017.

Born in Fleetwood on December 8, 1928, he was the son of the late Harry B. Rhoads, Sr. and Emma L. (Harmeyer) Rhoads.  Harry was a 1946 graduate of Fleetwood High School.  He joined the Navy in 1946, and served as a Naval Photographer first on the Blimp Squadron at Lakehurst, NJ  and then on the USS Midway. After leaving the Navy in 1949, he returned to Fleetwood and went to work for Royal Woodworks, Reading, and Quaker Maid Kitchens, Leesport before gaining employment as a Graphic Arts Photographer for Executive Services in Wyomissing and then at Kutztown Published Company, where he worked for 30 years before retiring in 1993.

Harry married Ruth in 1951 and after living briefly in Shoemakersville, he built a stone home in Fleetwood with the help of his father.  He raised three daughters there and was a resident of Fleetwood until 2008.  He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fleetwood, where he served on church council.  He was also an active member of the Fleetwood Community throughout his life, serving on the Fleetwood Borough Council for 12 years, including 4 years as President as well as Vice President of the Planning Commission and Sewer Authority. For many years he was also Vice President of the Fleetwood Cemetery board and served as chaplain of the American Legion Post 625 in Fleetwood, where he was a lifetime member. After retirement, he and his wife also spent countless hours volunteering for various activities and programs for the Fleetwood Area School District, Fleetwood Grange and Fleetwood Senior Citizens.

Harry had a lifelong love of travel, beginning with his Navy career and lasting through his lifetime. Highlights of his travels included a trip to Paraguay and Brazil when his daughter served in the Peace Corps, cruises to Alaska and through the Panama Canal, and numerous road trips throughout the United States and Canada.

He is survived by his wife Ruth and three daughters, Karin M. Rhoads-Bridgham (wife of Dennis Bridgham) of Temecula, CA, Beverly D. Rhoads of Sandia Park, NM, and Sharon Rhoads McQueen (wife of David McQueen) of Salinas, CA.  He also has two grandchildren, Celeste Marie Rhoads (wife of Cedric Maheo) of Paris, France and Evan Rhoads Bridgham of San Diego, CA and one precious great-granddaughter, Teila-June Emma Marie Maheo-Rhoads. He is also survived by sister Ada E. (Rhoads) Kirschen and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his brother Lewis Rhoads and sister Kathryn Rhoads.

A viewing will be held Monday, October 22, at 10:00AM to 11;00 AM from St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 117 East Arch Street, Fleetwood.  Followed by funeral services at 11:00AM.. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery, Dryville.
