Howard A. "Ted" Manning III of Reading, died Sunday, March 19th at the Berkshire Center. He was the husband of Catherine (Deisher) Manning; they celebrated 45 years of marriage on August 20th. Ted was 69 years old.
Born in Worcester, MA on November 5th, 1947, he was a son of the late Howard A. Manning Jr. and Jane (Sampson) Manning.
Ted graduated from Auburn High School in 1965. He studied civil engineering at Bucknell University where he received a BS degree in 1969. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
Ted was most recently employed by WorleyParsons, Reading, where he was a Quality Assurance Manager for engineering and design for nuclear power plants since 2007. He retired in 2015. Earlier in his career he worked for Gilbert/Commonwealth, Inc. of Reading (1972-1991). Notably, he worked on the Recovery quality program for Three Mile Island following the 1979 accident as well as the Quality program in South Africa for a new nuclear plant in that country. He worked at Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station from 1991-1993 (Philadelphia Electric Co.). From 1993 to 2007, he was employed by Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC). He worked for SAIC in Abingdon, MD, Frederick, MD, and for four years on Johnston Island in the central Pacific. During his time with SAIC he worked on the Quality Assurance Program for NCI cancer and AIDS research and provided quality assurance for the safe destruction of chemical weapons. He served as Chairman of the ASME Committee on Nuclear Accreditation, and was a recipient of the ASME Distinguished Service Award.
Ted loved railroad history, especially routes and structures. He also enjoyed local history, especially canals and industries. He was a member of the Historical Society of Berks County and the Reading Company Technical and Historical Society. He was a Phillies and Eagles fan, and he enjoyed golfing and going for walks. Ted was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Reading, where he had previously served on the Vestry.
Ted is survived by his wife, Catherine, and his daughters Jessica and Sarah. Jessica A. Manning is a music teacher at the Oley Valley School District. Sarah Manning Bierly works as a zookeeper at the Philadelphia Zoo. She resides in Montgomery County with her husband, David B. Bierly. Also surviving are sisters Sally (Manning) Culp, wife of Wayne Culp, of Inman, SC and Meredith "Susie" (Manning) Yunten, wife of Tamer Yunten, of Christiansburg, VA. He is preceded in death by his brother, Jerome A. Manning and sister-in-law Susan (Padgett) Manning.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 on April 22, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Reading.
