Burkert

Jay Burkert, of Fleetwood Pa, passed away on Sunday August 8 th 2021 at the age of 88. Born in Elizabethville Pa, he was the son of the late Elmer Burkert and Mae Weida. He was married to his wife Jeanette (Serfass) Burkert in 1959. Jay is survived by his wife Jeanette Burkert and daughter Lisa Hughes and husband Mike Hughes, and daughter Karen Burkert. He is also survived by two grandsons Steven Hughes and his wife Lynn Hughes and Matthew Hughes and his fiancé Shelby Szoke. He is also survived by two great grandsons, Conner Hughes and Cooper Hughes.
Jay was a 1950 graduate of Fleetwood High School. He served as a Staff Sargent in the Air Force for 4 years during the Korean War as a gunner on a B-29.
Jay graduated from Penn State University in 1959 with a degree in electrical engineering. He was a member of Eta Cappa Nu Electrical Honor Society and a member of the PSU Town Independent Men's Council (TIM). Jay was a registered professional engineer and also graduated from the University of Michigan Utility Executive Program in 1972.
Jay was employed by Metropolitan Edison Company as a corporate engineer and later serving as the Manager of Electrical Engineering. He retired after 32 years as the Distribution Engineering and Operations Director.
He was a member of St. Paul's UCC in Fleetwood serving as deacon and elder, chairman of the budget committee for 10 years and financial secretary for 6 years. He served as a chairman of the Fleetwood Planning Commission for more than 43 years. He was also a member of the Fleetwood Jaycees and later became a charter member of the Fleetwood Lions Club for over 50 years serving as president and secretary. He also received the Melvin James Fellows Award for Outstanding Service.
He was a die-hard Penn State football fan for many years and rarely missed a Penn State home game by traveling with their camper.
Traveling was always a passion for the Burkerts. One of their most memorable trips was to the Holy Lands in Egypt. They also took trips with their entire family to Disney World, California, Hawaii, Alaska, and the Caribbean to celebrate their 50 th wedding anniversary.
In leu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Paul's UCC 5 W Arch Street Fleetwood Pa 19522. Services will be held on August 21 2021 for family and friends at 11:00 AM at the St. Paul's Union Church Memorial Columbarium adjacent to St. Paul's Union Cemetery 364 Park Road, Fleetwood, PA 19522.
