John S. Meyer, age 84, of Mohnton passed away on Saturday August 2, 2014 in the Highlands of Wyomissing. He was the loving husband of the late Anna M. (Wanner) Meyer who passed on October 11, 2013, they had been married 61 years.
Born on July 29, 1930, in Lancaster, Pa. He was the son of the late Carl V. Meyer and Mildred M. (Shunk) Meyer.
He was a 1948 graduate of Reading High School. Received his bachelor of science degree from Kutztown University in 1952 and his master degree in education from Temple University.
John was a teacher at Governor Mifflin High School for 33 years retiring in 1986
He was a volunteer at the Ephrata Cloisters where he worked as a historical interpreter and a member of the board of directors. During this time he received the Pennsylvania volunteer of the year award from the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission for his service.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Mohnton.
John was a man of numerous talents ranging from oil painting, Spinning wool, folding German Christmas stars to chair caining and playing piano. He loved his antique clocks, train yards and cherished handed down heirlooms. His expertise was fashioning fantastic hand decorated ostrich, goose and chicken eggs. He filled his home with these beautiful eggs for all seasons. John was a beloved father and grandfather and his sense of humor and wit will be missed.
Survived by his children: son Robert D. Meyer, husband of Sheryl L., of Collegeville and daughter, Sara R. (Meyer), wife of Harry L .Leininger, of Bernville. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Elijah Leininger, Joanna Swanger, Crystal Apsokardu and Rebecca Meyer. Also four great-grandchildren: Serena and Logan Leininger, Willow Swanger and Kaylee Apsokardu.
Funeral services will be Monday morning at 11:00 am from the Mae A. Stump Funeral Home, 117 West Main Street, Fleetwood. Burial will be in St. Paul's Union Cemetery, Fleetwood.. Contributions can be made to the Vision Resource Center of Berks County, 2020 Hampden Blvd., Reading, PA 19604
