Joseph E. Schlegel, age 90, of Fleetwood passed away on February 6, 2014 at his residence. He was the husband of Betty J. Schlegel who passed on March 25, 2008 He was born in Richmond Township on October 19, 1923. The son of the late Lloyd D. Schlegel and Lizzie W. (Wahl) Schlegel.
Joseph graduated from Fleetwood High School class of 1941whwere he played both baseball and basketball for the school. A U S Marine veteran of World War II. From 1946 to 1948 he played baseball for the St. Louis Cardinal's Farmer League in Lynchburg, VA
. Joseph worked for Carpenter Technology Corp, Reading for 32 years. During that time he carried mail for the Fleetwood Post Office. He enjoyed playing golf and cards, and going on Bieber Mystery Tours.
Joe was the last of nine siblings and the last surviving family member of the historic Christian Schlegel Farm dating from August 15, 1738. He also was one of the caretaker's of the family farm.
He is survived by his children Joseph T. Schlegel of Fleetwood and Diane S. (Schlegel) Holland and son in law Dennis G. Mulholland of Temple. Other survivors include grandchildren: Erika L. Holland – Arena wife of Dominic Arena, Derek E. Holland, Jeffrey M. Holland husband of Katelyn Holland, Jazzelle L. Schlegel, and Miles T. Morgan. Also great grandchildren Genevieve A. Arena and Joscelyn J. Arena. and many nieces and nephews. Joseph was preceded in death by his daughter JoAnn L. (Schlegel) Morgan.
A memorial service will be held at Mae A. Stump Funeral Home, Inc. 117 West Main Street, Fleetwood on Saturday March 8th at 11:00 a.m. A family visitation will be Friday 10:00 am to time of service. Burial will be private in Hope Cemetery, Dryville.
