Obituary
Julia L. Benz, age 88, of Fleetwood, passed away Tuesday February 16, 2016 in Reading Hospital Medical Center, West Reading. She was the wife of the late Thomas E. Benz who passed on October 12, 2000. Julia was born in Coplay, the daughter of the late Stephen Szoke and Julia (Rasky) Szoke.
She was a 1945 graduate of Kutztown High School. Julia worked for the former Western Electric/AT&T/Luccent, Reading for 25 years. She was a member of Becker's St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Molltown. She loved watching sports, especially the Golf Channel as well as the Food Network's Ina Garten "Barefoot Contessa." She also enjoyed travel and dining out with the Bahama Momma's. Her other interest's included doing word scramble in the daily newspaper, collecting knickknacks and bird artwork of the Northern Cardinal, and listening to Hungarian music on the radio. An interesting fact is that while working as a waitress at Heckman's Diner, circa 1950, she appeared in an advertisement poster as a model for the car company Studebaker.
Julia is survived by her sons David M. Benz of Fleetwood and Seth T. Benz husband of Susan L. Burwell of Belfast, Maine. There are three grandchildren Carolyn N. (Benz) Neider, Melanie L. Benz, Thomas M. Benz and one great grandson Grayden M. Benz. Other survivors include two brother's Frank A. Szoke of Fleetwood, Alex J. Szoke of Fleetwood and two sisters Edie (Szoke) Haller of Blandon and Eleanor (Szoke) Roberts of Fleetwood.
She was preceded in death by her siblings Bertha (Szoke) Sommers, Lena (Szoke)Hacker and Stephen Szoke.
Services will be private with burial in St. Peter's Cemetery, Molltown. Contributions can be made in Julia's memory to the memorial fund Becker's St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 265 Maidencreek Road, Fleetwood, PA 19522. The Mae A. Stump Funeral Home, Inc. is in charge of arrangements
