Dr. Peggy L. Garrett, retired professor of English at Kutztown University, died April 5, 2018 at Reading Hospital. Dr. Garrett, 88, is survived by her husband, Dr. Philip L. Garrett. She is also survived by brother-in-law Dean Garrett and a niece, Kathy Chronister and nephew, Dean Garrett II. Dr. Garrett was a professor of English at Kutztown University for 23 ½ years. She previously taught at York College in York, PA.
Born in East Orange, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Floyd R. and Alice (Weaver) Deardorff. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fleetwood. She was also a member the Order of Eastern Star, East Penn Chapter 336; American Association of University Women; the East Penn Association of School Retirees; Association of Pennsylvania State Colleges and University Retired Faculties.
Dr. Garrett received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bucknell University and a Master of Arts in English from Pennsylvania State University and her Doctorate of Philosophy in English from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
She enjoyed reading, yoga, tennis, riding her bicycle as well as playing the cello.
A viewing will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 14, 2018 from St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 117 East Arch Street, Fleetwood. At 10:45 a.m. Order of Eastern Star service by East Penn Chapter 336. Followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m. Rev. Thomas Lang officiating.
Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery in York, PA at the family's convenience.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Peggy's memory to St. Paul's Lutheran Church 117 E. Arch Street in Fleetwood, PA 19522
