Obituary
Richard L. Rothermel retired president and co-founder of one of America's largest independent subscription agencies passed away suddenly at Bryn Mawr Hospital on Friday January 16, 2015. A magazine circulation veteran who started selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door enjoyed a career that spanned more than fifty years, with such publishing companies as Curtis, McCall's, Dell and Perfect Subscriptions Company before becoming president of Keystone reader's Service, Inc., and later, his own Magazine Service Bureau in 1980.
Mr. Rothermel, son of the late Lloyd R. and Naomi (Brensinger) Rothermel, was a native of Fleetwood, Pa. and graduated from its high school before joining the U S Navy where he served as a Radioman Second Class. After discharge Mr. Rothermel graduated from Albright College in Reading, PA in 1950 before joining the Curtis Publishing Company.
Joined in marriage in 1950 with the former Josephine S. Stahler, they celebrated thir 64 anniversary in September. His wife and their children, Cynthia Edington, Wayne, PA, Kathy Daubenspeck, Oceanside, CA and David L. Rothermel, Phoenixville and three grandsons survive.
Mr. Rothermel loved to sing barbershop harmony and was a life member of the Barbershop Harmony Society. He received Barbershopper of the year recognition from the Bryn Mawr, PA and Westchester County, NY Chapters. Classic automobiles were a hobby and he owns a 1972 Jaguar XKE roaster. Tennis, Golf, Bridge and a strong interest in the Philadelphia Orchestra rounded out his interests.
Mr. Rothermel was an elder of the Wayne Presbyterian Church. He was a member of the Hugnenot Lodge, F&AM #377 Kutztown, PA, Valley of Cincinnati, ASSR, and was a Shriner. In 1989 he was elected to Who's Who in the world. Besides Publishing Associations Memberships, he was a past member of Waynesboro Country Club, Paoli and Mariner Sands Country Club Stuard, FL.
Funeral service will be private with burial in Fleetwood, PA. In lieu of flowers family suggest donations made to the Bryn Mawr Babershop Harmony Chapter, 1105 Lincoln Highway East, Exton, PA 19341.
