IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert J.
Millar
February 15, 1951 – August 4, 2023
Robert J. "Bob" Millar, 72, of Ruscombmanor Township died on Friday, August 4, 2023.
Born in Abington Hospital and raised in Hatboro, Pa., Bob was the son of the late Robert E. Millar and Louise (Mitsch) Millar. He was the loving husband of Lynn (Harding) Millar; together since 1968, they were married for more than 49 years.
In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his daughter, Nancy E. "Nyla" Millar of Wilmington, Del., and sons, Reed J. Millar (Kathryn Eukel) of Minneapolis and Scotty E. Millar (Melissa Foltz) of Exeter, Pa. He is also survived by three wonderful grandchildren, Felix, Hugo, and Nora; two sisters, Marion (Millar) Bates of Australia and Linda (Millar) Lampman of Alabama; two beloved dogs, Ms. Skye and Evie; and extended family around the world.
After graduating from Hatboro-Horsham High School and receiving his degree from Kutztown University, Bob was a teacher and professor for more than 40 years, ultimately retiring as a Professor of the Social Sciences at Reading Area Community College. He was very active in political and social groups, especially the Democratic Party, American Federation of Teachers, American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), Planned Parenthood, Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology, Democratic Socialists of America, Sierra Club's Pennsylvania Chapter, and many others. He served as a leader in many of these organizations, including terms as president of the Berks County ACLU, a director of the Berks County Planned Parenthood Center, and chair of the Reading-Berks Democratic Socialists. A frequent lecturer and writer on indigenous Americans, he was a director and past president of the Schuylkill Valley Chapter of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology.
Bob hosted several programs on Berks Community Television, served on the Berks County Planning Commission, and co-founded the Greater Reading Political Action Committee, which has raised more than $100,000 for progressive candidates in Berks County. In 2013, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Berks County Democratic Committee in recognition of his decades of service, and he continued to work as a political activist and community leader until his death.
Bob and Lynn enjoyed long trips to Australia. They loved the land and the people, as well as the time spent with Bob's sister Marion, her husband Michael Bates, and numerous nieces and nephews. While his legacy lives on in the far-reaching impact of his political activism, Bob will be greatly missed by friends and family around the globe.
A public celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, August 13, at 2 p.m. at the Berks County Democratic Committee, 1251 N. Front St., Reading, Pa.
