On Saturday May 5, 2018 Ronald C Mest, 75 passed away after a difficult & determined battle with cancer. His wife, Bernice L Mest (Kehm) and family by his side. Ron was born in Reading, PA on December 10, 1942 to the late Raymond and Verna Mest. Ron & Bernice married on October 18 th , 1969 and have been married for 48 years. They have 3 children (Michele, Ronald M., Matthew) and 7 grandchildren.
Ron enlisted in the Air Force from 1961 – 1965. During his career with the Air Force he received the Presidential Accommodation Medal for the Cuban Missile Crisis. He joined the CIA from 1965-1968. After serving the US government he joined the Reading, PA police department in 1969 and served for 25 years. He was promoted to Detective and then Sergeant. His heroic actions in the 1985 deadly fire at the YMCA granted him a Medal of Honor from the city of Reading. In 1993 retiring from the Reading police force Ron was elected as District Judge for 2 terms and served as Senior Judge for 8 years. During his time on the police force and in the judicial system Ron was a leader. Elected President of the FOP and served on the Board of Directors of Special Court Judges Association, and a member of the American Legion.
Ron was elected as Commander of the Zellwood Veterans Club for 2016 & 2017. On the 75 th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor he hosted a dinner to honor the WWII and Korean Veterans.
Ron and Bernice are members of the Rolling Hills Community Church in Zellwood, FL and members of the Christ Delong UCC church in Bowers PA.
Survived by his wife, Bernice Mest; daughter, Michele McNamara wife of Shawn McNamara, Mossic, PA; son, Ronald Mest husband of Diane Mest, Knoxville, TN; son, Matthew Mest husband of Jennifer (Richards) Mest, Fleetwood, PA. Also, seven grandchildren: Brandon, Ronald, Rebekah, Jacob, Nora, Madison & Lucas.
Other survivors are brother Richard Mest; sister, Patricia Moore; brother, Robert Mest; In laws, Alton & Shirley Kehm.
Funeral will be Saturday, May 19 th , 2018 at 10 AM at Christ Delong UCC Church, 63 Old Bowers Road, Bowers, PA 19511.
Friends & colleagues may call on Thursday evening from 6 PM to 8 PM in Mae A. Stump Funeral Home, Inc., 117 West Main Street Fleetwood.
