IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thomas J.
Canto, Sr.
November 1, 1950 – February 27, 2025
Tom Canto, 74, of Blandon, passed away on Thursday, February 27, 2025 at Penn State Health St. Joseph, surrounded by his loving family. Tom lived a fulfilling life and was always a fountain of knowledge. He often reminded his family of this by sharing an endless supply of one-liners and catchphrases—enough to fill a book.
He enjoyed many things, including fishing, playing with his "pupster," and visiting casinos. Tom also loved playing his vinyl records and making more than the occasional trip to Yocco's. He was an avid fan of classic movies such as Singin' in the Rain and Stars and Stripes Forever and had an occasional laugh at Dumb and Dumber. He had a deep appreciation for Big Band jazz and the Golden Oldies, but his favorite sound was that of a fire siren.
Tom began his firefighting career as a junior firefighter at the age of 14. He served as Fire Chief for Mohnton Fire Company and Assistant Fire Chief for Virginville Fire Company, ultimately concluding his more than 30-year career with the Blandon Fire Department. Beyond his dedication to firefighting, Tom held many professional roles throughout his life, including technician at Agway, Criminal Justice Specialist at the Pinellas County Jail, and, most recently, security guard for Monterey. However, the most important role he held was that of a husband and father.
Tom was predeceased by his father, Antonio Canto, and his mother, Betty (Organtini) Canto. He is survived by his wife, Linette Canto of Blandon, and his children: Sean Canto; Tina Smith, wife of Jeff Smith; Thomas Canto Jr., husband of Amanda Canto; and Alycia Canto-Sweitzer, wife of James Sweitzer. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Mackenzie, Allessandra, Austin and Camdyn.
Tom chose to donate his body to science so that the practice of medicine may continue to advance. A celebration of his life will be held at the Blandon Fire Company on March 29, 2025, from 1:00 to 4:00 PM.
In the words of Nat King Cole, Tom's legacy and memory will truly be "unforgettable."
In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom's memory can be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation or The Firefighter Cancer Foundation.
