William O. Heydt age 91 formerly of Fleetwood died Thursday September 29th in the Lutheran Home at Topton. He was the widower of Mildred A. (Jones) Heydt who passed on June 17, 2001.
Born in Rockland Township on January 29, 1925, he was a son of the late Elwood Heydt and Christina (Henry) Heydt.
William attended Kuztown School district. He joined the Army in 1943 as an infantryman during World War II spending 511 days in combat, in less than two years. He served in campaigns in Sicily, Anzio, and Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded three times and awarded the Purple Heart with Three Oak Leaf Clusters and a Bronze Star.
He had worked as a rural postal carrier for the Fleetwood Post Office retiring in 1990. William was a member of Christ Mertz Lutheran Church in Dryville.
He is survived by his two daughters, brother Elwood Heydt of Iowa and sisters Eva H, (Heydt) Sanders, Ruth (Heydt) Hertzog and Carrie (Heydt) Aulenbach all of Topton. In addition, he is also survived by nieces and nephews. William was preceded in death by a brother Leo Heydt.
Funeral service will be Tuesday October 4th at 1:00 pm from the Mae A. Stump Funeral Home, Inc., 117 West Main Street, Fleetwood.
Burial will be in Maxatawny Zion Union Cemetery with military honors.
